MINES and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando has appointed a new board for the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ), which is chaired by Mr David Murangari.

The other members of the board are Mr Isaac Kwesu, Ms Rose Mukogo, Mr Ignatius Tichivangana, Dr Merch Manyuchi, Ms Ester Maravanyika and Mr Jermister Chininga.

Following the appointment, Minister Chitando implored the new board to hit the ground running as the MMCZ was expected to play a significant role in feeding into the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development’s vision to make mining one of the leading contributors to the revival of the country’s economy.

He said the mining industry was set to contribute immensely to President Mnangagwa’s 2030 vision and the MMCZ should be geared to play its part.

The new Government, led by President Mnangagwa has come up with Vision 2030 through which it desires to transform the citizens’ living standards by ensuring that they have decent jobs by 2030.

Through Vision 2030, Government also wants to achieve a middle-income economy with per capita income approaching $3 500 per person.

On Monday the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development led by Norton MP Mr Temba Mliswa grilled Mines and Mining Development Permanent Secretary Mr Onesimo Moyo over delays in appointing a board for MMCZ.

The Committee feared that delays in appointing MMCZ board might perpetuate the old situation where the parent ministry ran State entities, thus undermining the ethos of corporate governance when the former secretary Professor Francis Gudyanga and Minister Walter Chidhakwa unilaterally ran the State entities under the ministry’s purview without boards.
