NEWLY appointed Zimbabwe national cricket team coach Dav Whatmore is happy with the progress that the squad is making in their preparations for the 2015 ICC World Cup to be held in New Zealand from February 13 to March 28. Whatmore said they were preparing hard for the World Cup finals given the short time they have to get ready.

“We are working very hard to get the squad ready for the world cup in the short space of time that is left.

“The guys seem to be eager to learn how to co-ordinate, I think that everything is under control,” he said.

Whatmore said the players acknowleged that they had a bad series in Bangladesh.

“The guys know that the nation is not happy with their last series in Bangladesh and from what I see I think they are at their best and would want to improve the performance at the forthcoming World Cup,” he said.

Whatmore said the team has been experiencing some challenges at training.

“We have been experiencing challenges at training particularly with the weather, the rains have prevented the guys from conducting practise sessions but I think we will be ready for the World Cup.

“The batsmen in the squad have been scoring high runs and bowlers getting wickets in the local Pro50 matches. We have been also conducting theoretical lessons for the team for them to grasp some of the important concepts that they were missing in the past games,” he said.

Whatmore urged the nation to rally behind the squad as they need a lot of support before and during the World Cup finals.

“We need as much support as possible from the nation, in our preparation stages and during the world cup,” he said.
