ZIFA Central League champions Whawha, bade Division One football in style when they crushed closest rivals MSU 4-0 at Whawha over the weekend. Goals by the league’s top goal scorer, Albert “Dracula” Matewu, Donald Madzinga, Laison Ntalika and an own goal by one of the MSU defenders ensured that the correctional services side exit the league on a high.

Whawha’s win meant that they finished at the top of the table standings with 58 points from 26 games, seven clear of second placed MSU which managed 51 points from the same number of matches.

The weekend round of matches marked the end of the Zifa Central Region season which continues to be characterised by financial challenges.

The CSL which has failed to attract meaningful sponsorship since its inception in 2010 was reduced to a 14-team league down from 16 teams after former Premiership outfit, Tripple B folded.

Another Beitbridge side, Town United which in the past was bankrolled by Beitbridge Town Council could not take part in this year’s campaign despite paying their affiliation fees after the council authorities announced that they could no longer fund the club.

In place of Town United the league management roped in Zvishavane Stars whose co-option was met with stiff resistance from some clubs in the league.

Like the previous seasons where some clubs failed to last the distance due to financial challenges, the just ended season was no different as Gokwe-based Chomumvuri Pirates failed to last the distance and were expelled from the league during the mid season break.
