ZIMDANCEHALL supremo Winky D seems to be a cat with nine lives as the moment many think that he has been overtaken by fellow artistes he comes back with a bang and overshadows his rivals.

With the chart topping hit track Disappear, the Gafa as Winky D is known these days, has outshined other dancehall chanters.

The song was a hit at the #FillUpHICC shutdown gig hosted by Jah Prayzah on New Year’s Eve last year, affirming that Winky D’s status as the Ninja President. His recent performance at the 7 Arts Theatre in Harare also left fans clamouring for more.

But what keeps this dreadlocked chanter ticking? The man of sober habits who in most songs has made it clear that he loves his Coca Cola believes he has stayed ahead of his competition because he simply sings for the masses.

“I’m the poor person’s devotee. I don’t sing just to be trendy. I’m there to address the dynamics of poverty and how poor people can avert ills that’re endemic in society,” said Winky D.

“Poverty has so many dynamics which we can never cease talking about and which need to be addressed all the time. I try and address these things in my songs and that keeps me relevant.”

Contrary to other artistes, Winky D who has performed in the Big Brother Africa House in South Africa has a vision off which he has set goals.

“Everything I do is going towards a greater goal of what we want to achieve as a band. This year I want to look beyond my musical achievements locally as I want to penetrate the international scene and do more collaborations that will surpass the music I’ve produced thus far.”

The Ninja President said fans should expect a track on his birthday, February 1, when he will be turning 33. Last year, he dropped a celebratory track, Paita Party.

“Usually birthdays are a day of reflection, where one looks at what they want to achieve and where they’ve come from. This is why I release a track on most of my birthdays,” he said.

He urged fans in Bulawayo to prepare for a night to remember tomorrow when he stages a Maproblems eseDisapper concert at Hartsfield Tshisa Nyama.
