A MASVINGO woman and her five year-old daughter drowned in Madzore Dam after the woman jumped in to rescue the girl who had slipped into the water.

Acting Masvingo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dehwa said the incident occurred on Thursday last week at around 2PM.

He identified the deceased as Ansicaria Mazhindu (49) and Trust Muza (5) of Mukosi Resettlement area under Chief Shumba.

Police said post-mortem was waived as no foul play was suspected.

He said Mazhindu was doing laundry in Madzore Dam while the girl was playing with their three-year-old nephew, when tragedy struck.

“We have received a report of sudden death by drowning involving a woman and her daughter. The woman drowned while trying to rescue her daughter who had slipped into the water leading to a double tragedy,’’ said Asst Insp Dehwa.

He said when Mazhindu realised that her daughter was drowning she jumped into the dam and tried to rescue the tot.

Asst Insp Dehwa said Mazhindu’s nephew rushed home to call for help.

“The three-year-old nephew rushed home and called the late woman’s husband Mr Mapfaka Muza (60) who teamed up with other villagers and managed to retrieve the two bodies from the dam,” he said.

“We advise members of the public against doing laundry inside water bodies as this is disastrous to both adults and children. They should use containers to draw water and do their washing some distance away to avoid such mishaps.”
