THE Zambian Africa Cup of Nations cycling team will take part in the Zimbabwean 2015 Africa Cup of Nations cycling qualifiers race to be held in Bulawayo on Sunday. Chrispen Kazingizi, one of the organisers, said the Zambian cycling team coach Bright Chintu sent Zimbabwe Cycling a letter requesting to participate in the first Afcon qualifiers race.

“Chintu sent a request to the Cycling Zimbabwe board requesting that his team uses Zimbabwe’s first race as a barometer for their Afcon preparations,” he said.

Kazingizi said the Zambians would be participating in the Bulawayo race only.“There’ll be two races used to select cyclists that will represent the country next year in South Africa but the Zambians will take part in the first one which is the 115 km elite race in Bulawayo,” he said. Kazingizi said the Bulawayo race would start at Cecil Avenue Cell Tower. Cyclists will race to Esigodini, turn back into Cecil Avenue and then onto Matopos Road where they will cycle to the finishing line at the Tshabalala Game Sanctuary gate. The two races will determine the fitness of cyclists and city athletes have already started training hard for the first race. “The two races are meant to test Zimbabwean cyclists’ fitness and capability to endure the Pietermaritzburg long distance race,” said Kazingizi.
