A JOVIAL atmosphere gripped the Zimbabwe Housing Trust Building on Thursday when more than 100 people with disabilities received special Christmas grocery hampers from Zanu-PF’s Greens District.

The handover ceremony coincided with the 35th anniversary of the Unity Day commemorations.
The party’s district chairperson, Cde Tendai Charuka, handed over the donations, which included mealie-meal, cooking oil and sugar.

In response, the beneficiaries said the donation was more symbolic as it came on Unity Day and shows the ruling party is determined to ensure that no one and no part of the country is left behind.

Mr Nkosilathi Dube who leads the Association on Empowering Persons With Disability said they were excited by the positive gesture from the ruling party adding that the hamper will go a long way in making Christmas great.

“I am looking forward to more projects that we will be doing next year. We had already started doing some minor projects like washing powder making as we believe in empowering and not living anyone behind,” he said.

Ms Ruth Sithole said getting the hampers on Unity Day shows that the ruling party and the Government cares about them.

“This is really great and shows that people living with disabilities are not being left behind just like the President’s vision says. I am happy this Christmas we won’t go to bed hungry,” she said.

The founder of Children Born and Living With Disability, Mr Bokai Dube, said he was happy the district had remembered them.

He said Cde Charuka had shown everyone that he is passionate about helping people living with disabilities.

“The chairperson does his best to make sure that people living with disabilities are taken care of. He would rather help people living with disabilities than anyone else,” said Mr Dube.

“By handing over the donation today on Unity Day he has managed to unite people from different backgrounds. It shows that we are being understood by the party and the Government,” he said.

In his remarks, Cde Charuka said the donation was a way of giving back to the community and leaving no one behind. He said they chose 22 December as a way of showing that unity is critical in nation-building and that people living with disability should not be sidelined.

“We donated to more than 100 families today and this is not the only project that we are doing with them. We recently started washing powder making and detergents project with them because we want people living with disabilities to be empowered,” said Cde Charuka.
