THE Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) is holding a week long boxing course for referees and judges in Gweru.
ZBF technical director, Petros Masiyambumbi said the course is targeting new referees and judges who will officiate at club and provincial boxing championships.

“We are holding a club officials course which started on Monday and will run up to Saturday and participants who successfully complete the course will be awarded certificates.

“On completion, the participants will be able to officiate at club and provincial level. This is the first level of the official course and we hope that those who will succeed will go on and acquire higher qualifications,” he said.

Masiyambumbi said the federation was holding the courses across the country as part of the preparations for the Region Five Games which the country will play host to in Bulawayo in December.

He said so far six courses have already been held in Masvingo, Bulawayo, Manicaland, Mashonaland West and Harare.

Another course was held for the Zimbabwe National Army which is considered a province by the boxing body.

The technical services director commended the turnout of women at the Gweru course.

The course saw seven women out of 10 participants taking part.

He said: “We are encouraging more women to come and take part in these courses because as a boxing federation we are conscious of the need to integrate women into the sport.”

Masiyambumbi said an advanced referees’ course is on the cards and will be held between July 14-25 in Harare.
