SOUTH Africa-based Zimbabwean DJ, George Munetsi who gained popularity after featuring on Zahara’s hit track Incwad’ Encane shone last weekend when he won the Best Daytime Radio Show award at the MTN Radio Awards held in Johannesburg.Munetsi added another gong to his illustrious radio broadcasting career which spans two decades when his Georgie in the Afternoon (GITA) radio show on Kaya FM was adjudged the best at the awards.

In 2011, the GITA radio show host won the best collaboration award at the South Africa Music Awards for the song Incwad’ Enwcane. Zahara’s album Loliwe which carries the track Incwad’ Encane went on to reach double platinum figures in South Africa.

The radio personality who cut his teeth in Zimbabwe at the then Radio 3 in the early 90’s said he expected to win the award as he had been in the game for a long time. Munetsi asserted that he managed to evolve with the changing trends in radio broadcasting.

“It feels good to have won this award. I was confident I would win.  The spirits told me it was my year and I should send my entry. Losing was certainly going to destroy my spirit and desire to keep doing what I love best — radio,” he said.

Being a veteran broadcaster, Munetsi said he knew how to handle the challenges posed by new technologies in the sector.

“It is good having been around this long and having graduated from the University of Hard Knocks — that is the days of analogue, reel to reel tapes and cassettes.
“There is nothing that technology can throw at me now that can overwhelm me. My job is more of a stroll in the park.  Most importantly I have managed to evolve and keep up with the game and I can now hold my own in the face of relentless competition from the hungry and enthusiastic up and coming youngsters.”

The veteran DJ has arguably hosted the most successful show at Kaya FM as it commands the highest listenership on the station. Munetsi jokingly said he would demand that his statue be erected at the radio station’s reception area when he retires.

The latest award follows similar honours when he was named best presenter on Kaya FM in 2010 and best radio newcomer when he joined the radio station in 1997. Apart from radio presenting, Munetsi has curved a niche in the music industry as well.

Besides Zahara, Munetsi has done duets with different artistes and is now working on his collaborations album.

“I have done other collaboration copies and have sent them to Zimbabwean radio stations. There is  Rudo featuring Kruna, Watiza Meta, a solo track and the latest Zimbabwe/Nigeria collaboration with Eternal titled New Day,” said Munetsi.
