ZIMBABWE football greats are set to take on their Rest of Africa counterparts on February 26 at the National Sports Stadium in a match aimed at honouring players that illuminated the local scene from 1965.

A local sport consultancy, ICA Sport Consultancy, is organising the game and has budgeted about $120,000 for staging the testimonial.

ICA technical director Julius Chakupewa said:

“It’s a way of appreciating our yesteryear local football heroes. We’re going to be launching the event on February 12 at Harare Gardens during a sport exhibition we’ll hold.”

Chakupewa said the exhibition would provide a platform for football clubs, academies and agents, among others, to showcase their products to local soccer enthusiasts.

As part of the selection process for legends that will feature for Zimbabwe, a series of selection matches have been lined up in which legends from the Northern Region will play against their counterparts from the Southern Region and Central Region on a round robin basis.

One of the coordinators of the selection matches, Benedict “Grinder” Moyo, who will also coach the Central Region team, said they had decided to stage the matches to ensure transparency in choosing the Zimbabwe Legends.

“We’re going to have the three regions playing against each other for us to come up with a team that will represent the country when we play the Rest of Africa Legends.

“This is to ensure that we have a true representation of former football players across the country,” Moyo said.

“The three regions will meet on a round robin basis and then we will come up with one squad. The games will be played between February 7 and 21.”

Moyo said the Central Region was urging former players to come on board by contacting him or Wonder Chaka for them to come up with a team to play against the other two regions.
