ZIMBABWE made a clean sweep in the 5,000m women final during Day Two of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games athletics meet at White City Stadium yesterday.

Coming up in her second final after romping to victory in the 3,000m a day earlier, Caroline Mhandu added a gold medal to the hosts table when she came home in 17minutes, 45.72 seconds, followed by countrywoman, Anna Bungu who clocked 17 minutes, 45.80 seconds. Bertha Chikanga, 3,000m silver medallist settled for bronze in 18minutes, 11.82 seconds to complete a memorable morning for the host nation.

So ruthless were the Zimbabwean trio that the next athlete home after Chikanga, Keneuoe Foloko, was almost 30 seconds behind as Zimbabwe made a complete sweep of middle and long distance track events.

After yesterday’s events, Zimbabwe were a gold medal behind South Africa heading into today’s meet. Malawi recorded their first medal of the competition when Puma Alinafe came third in the 1,500m T13 in 5minutes,03.73seconds.
