THE Government is drafting a death penalty position in Zimbabwe and shall be holding consultations at grassroots level across the country’s  10 provinces.

The Ministry of Justice, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs is working with the Centre for Applied Legal Research and the Embassy of Switzerland to carry out public outreach.

In a statement, the ministry said after convening a high-level consultative meeting on policy formulation and law reform agenda, several recommendations were proffered.

“One major reason highlighted was to amass public opinion on the matter. Against this backdrop, the ministry shall hold consultation at the grassroots level in March 2023 across the country’s provinces. Additionally, the ministry will conduct preliminary training of trainers with case care workers, village health workers, and youth officers in anticipation of the actual consultations to capacitate cadres on, mobilisation of participants ahead of the consultations,” read the statement.

In Bulawayo, the “Training of Trainers for Death Penalty Consultations” workshop will be held on 15 March between 9 and 2pm at Pandadaro Guest Lodge.

The ministry’s aim is to capacitate the public on the mobilisation of participants ahead of the consultations and to obtain a clear and unbiased representation of the community.
