THE Zimbabwe National Army will today hold a fundraising golf tournament at the Harry Allen Golf in Bulawayo that will see a number of amateur players taking to the greens to fundraise for the army’s five charities.

The ZNA has five charities which include the Tsanga Lodge Convalescent Centre in Nyanga for the rehabilitation of injured members of the uniformed forces.

There is also the ZNA Benevolence Fund for the welfare of troops on internal, external and international operations. It also runs a schools welfare trust for its five secondary and 12 primary schools.

The other ZNA Charity is the Widows and Orphans which takes care of widows and widowers of soldiers before they receive terminal benefits.

The fundraising activity kicked off last night with a dinner dance at a city hotel where the ZNA Commander Lieutenant General, Edzai Absolom Chimonyo, was the guest of honour and Steward Bank chief executive officer Lance Mambondiani was the guest speaker.

Today’s tournament tees off at 7AM.

In previous golf tournaments organised by the army, a field of over 100 players have taken part where the Four Ball Better Ball format has been used.

In this format, golfers tee off in groups of four (either as one four-person team or as two, two-person teams), and each golfer plays his own ball. So there are four balls in play on each hole, but only one ball (the better ball, or low ball) counts per team per hole.

If four-person teams are in use, then all four golfers tee off and play their own balls into the hole. The low score among the four counts as the team score for that hole.

If two-person teams are in use, then Team One and Team Two tee off together (so four balls are still in play), and each team’s low ball counts as that team’s score on each hole. With two-person teams, 4BBB can be played as stroke play or match play.

Besides the various civilian amateur golf players, a number of senior army commanders led by Lt Gen Chimonyo are expected to take to the greens.
