ZPC Kariba hold CAPS Utd at home

CAPS Utd 1-1 ZPC Kariba

ZPC Kariba goalkeeper Hamilton Makainganwa had a brilliant day on the field to enable his team escape with a point against giants CAPS United at Rufaro.

Makainganwa made a string of saves as Leeroy Murape gave the visitors a 39th minute lead with a superb solo effort.

But Makepekepe kept pressing and were deservedly rewarded with the equaliser when defender Hastings Chapusha headed the ball home from Godknows Murwira’s freekick soon after the re-start.

ZPC Kariba had exhibited high levels of organisation at the back early in the game but they almost paid dearly for letting veteran Ralph Kawondera take a shot at the edge of the box and goalkeeper Makainganwa had to stretch full length to tip the ball over the cross bar in the 28th minute.

Another elementary error by skipper Boid Mutukure almost gifted Makepekepe with an opportunity but the ZPC Kariba goalkeeper was quick off the line to thwart the danger.

The goalkeeper was also called to action in the 37th minute when he parried out Wayne Makuva’s blistering long range effort.

But then Makepekepe were punished for missing the chances when Leeroy Murape blocked Innocent Zambezi’s back pass just after the centreline and sprinted towards goal. In no time, the dimunitive forward had stormed into the Green Machine penalty box, turned his marker before unleashing a powerful grounder that gave the goalkeeper Ashley Reyners no chance with 39 minutes played.

Murape could have made it two before the breather following a defensive mix up in the Green Machine Box but he skied his shot, with Makepekepe goalkeeper and his defenders still sprawling on the ground.

Makepekepe still had one more chance to level matters before the break but Makainganwa was impressive once again as he denied utility man Godknows Murwira from a freekick with a spectacular dive.

But there was nothing much the ZPC Kariba goalkeeper could have done to preserve their lead after CAPS United had won another freekick in their territory soon after the halftime break.

Murwira delivered the ball in a delicate area and Makepekepe defender Hastings Chapusha planted a firm header at the back post to level matters in the 49th minute.

Makangainwa made another good save when he went down and stopped a low shot from Kawondera midway through the second half.

Makepekepe then gave Junior Bunjira his debut in the 78th minute and the young forward had some flashes of brilliance during the cameo.
