Masvingo acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Charity Mazula confirmed the discovery of AK rifle ammunition comprising 200 x 6mm grenade, a bomb and 592 rounds of 2.2mm rifle in Chiredzi.
Insp Mazula said on 23 April this year, Felix Zimizira (26) and Solomon Five (24) both of Village 2, Angus Range in Chiredzi, were ploughing in their field when they unearthed 200 x 6mm AK rifle ammunition.

The two alerted police who went to the scene and picked up the ammunition.

On the same day, a boy, Adoline Manongore (10), of Maradze Village, Chief Maranda, Mwenezi, was herding cattle in the bush  when he saw a grenade and a bomb buried in the ground. The boy went to the village head, Mr Marian Ruvengo, who went to Maranda police base where he reported the matter. Police went to the scene where they discovered a grenade with copper coating which was wearing out and a bomb with silver coating and a small blue electric cable which was fused to the bomb. The ammunition was buried in the ground.

Asst Insp Mazula said the police then enlisted the services of army engineers who came to the scene and collected the ammunition.

On 24 April, more ammunition was discovered in Hippo Valley Estates in Chiredzi by Masiti Nduku (65), of Muteri village, Hippo Valley while fishing from Muteri Dam.

She said while in the middle of fishing Nduku allegedly saw a plastic paper bag which appeared to be containing something. The man checked only to find out that the contents were rounds of ammunition.
The man alerted the police who went to the scene and discovered 591 rounds of a 2.2mm rifle.
Asst Insp Mazula said they suspected that the ammunition could have been left during the war of liberation in the late 70s.

“According to village head Ruvengo, of Maranda area in Mwenezi, the ammunition could have been left during the war of liberation sometime in the 1970s by liberation fighters,” she said.

She advised the public against tampering with the arms of war whenever they see them.

“We urge the public not to tamper with ammunition if they come across any but should alert the police as soon as possible
