A HWANGE man attacked his workmate with an axe, leaving him unconscious after accusing him of stealing his National Identity Card.

Abednico Ndebele (26) who works as a general hand at Khame Enterprises in Bulilima District struck his workmate Mr Adonis Sibanda (32) with an axe on the forehead.

Ndebele was not asked to plead when he appeared before Plumtree magistrate, Mr Taurai Manwere.

He was remanded in custody to August 21.

Prosecuting, Mr Zorodzai Pengapenga said Ndebele attacked Mr Sibanda on August 5 at around 2AM.

“On 4 August around 9PM, Ndebele and Mr Sibanda were drinking beer together at Khame Business Centre. Ndebele started accusing Mr Sibanda of stealing his National Identity Card from his room.

“Mr Sibanda denied the allegations which resulted in a misunderstanding between the two men. Ndebele advanced violently towards Mr Sibanda threatening to stab him but patrons who were drinking in the same bar intervened and managed to stop the brawl,” he said.

Mr Pengapenga said the owner of the bar accompanied Ndebele to his house and left him there.

He said at around 2AM, Ndebele woke up and went to Mr Sibanda’s house where he was sleeping and gained entry into the house through an open window.

“Mr Sibanda heard noises as Ndebele invaded his home and he woke up. He saw Ndebele advancing towards him armed with an axe. Mr Sibanda tried to flee but Ndebele struck him with an axe on the head and he lost consciousness,” Mr Pengapenga said.

Ndebele fled from the house and left Mr Sibanda lying in a pool of blood.

The prosecutor said Mr Sibanda later regained consciousness and went to a neighbour’s house to seek help. The matter was reported to the police resulting in Ndebele’s arrest.
