Bulawayo, Mat’land schools miss O’ Level honours
Prosper Ndlovu Acting News Editor
ONLY 10 secondary schools from the Matabeleland region made it into the top 100 in the 2013 Ordinary Level examinations, with John Tallach of Ntabazinduna sitting fourth nationally.
Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South combined performed poorly compared to their neighbours, Masvingo and Midlands provinces, which had 13 and nine schools respectively in the top 100.
Manicaland dominated with one of its schools, Monte Cassino Secondary, a girls-only school, recording a 100 percent rate while other schools in the province, Christe Mambo, Marist Brothers (Nyanga), Nyazura Adventist and St Faith’s Mission made it to the top 13. The schools are run by the Catholic Church.
Gweru-based Anderson High came second with a 97,1 percent rate from 79 candidates.
Rating the Matabeleland and Bulawayo schools, John Tallach, the Presbyterian Church of Scotland-run school, which recorded a 96,15 percent rate from 130 candidates, was followed by the Anglican-run St Columba’s High in Bulawayo’s Makokoba suburb which came 33rd nationally with an 80,8 percent pass rate from 167 candidates.
Next was Maranatha Adventist Secondary, located in Nketa suburb, at number 57 with a 69,86 percent pass rate from 147 candidates.
Maranatha and St Columba’s are day schools in the City of Kings.
Maranatha recorded 91 As in Ndebele, 24 As in Mathematics and 28 As in Biology while three male candidates scored 10 As each.
David Livingstone Secondary in Ntabazinduna settled for number 64 with a 67,3 percent pass mark from 104 candidates.
Usher High from Bulilima district posted a 66,92 percent pass rate from 133 candidates and came a respectable 68th.
Green Gables High, formerly Elite High in Khami, came number 69 with 65,79 percent passes from 38 candidates.
Minda High from Kezi took position 70 with a 64,95 percent pass rate from 97 candidates.
Mtshabezi of Gwanda came at number 79 with a 61,11 percent pass rate from 198 candidates.
A total of 126 candidates sat for the examinations at Thekwane High in Bulilima district, with the school recording a 57,14 percent pass rate and coming at number 91.
Bubi-based Inyathi High came at number 96 with a 56,32 percent pass rate from 87 candidates.
Affluent schools in the Matabeleland region such as CBC, Petra, Plumtree, Falcon College, Girls College, Masiyephambili and Dominican Convent had a shameful performance and are missing from the top 100 despite charging fees of around $1,000 per term.
The other schools of shame but from rural Matabeleland offering boarding facilities are Mzingwane, Empandeni, Manama, JZ Moyo, Matopo, Marist Brothers of Dete and Wanezi.
Bulawayo schools like Mpopoma, Mzilikazi, Milton, Sizane, Montrose Girls, Luveve and Founders were also conspicuous by their absence from the top 100.
Nine schools from the Midlands alone made it to the top hundred while Masvingo had 12 in the prestigious list.
Regina Mundi in Gweru came eighth, Hama Secondary 23rd, Shungu High 38th, Gweru’s St Patrick’s Secondary 50th, Dadaya in Zvishavane 53rd, Hanke Adventist Secondary 58th, Pakame Secondary 87th, Loreto Secondary 89th and Gokwe’s Chemhanza at number 92.
Masvingo’s finest include St Antony’s, Serima, Nyahuni, Gokomere, Pamushana, Lundi, Mukaro, Chivi, Zimuto, Makumbe, Mutendi, Mashoko and Mucheke secondary schools.
A total of 173,856 candidates sat for five and above subjects with 36,031 attaining five or more subjects with Grade C or better.
The overall national pass rate rose by 2,32 percent to 20,72 percent compared to 18,4 percent in 2012.
