PREPARATIONS for Culture Week commemorations that will run from May 16 to 23 are on course with the national celebrations and official launch to be held at Chinhoyi Stadium.

Bulawayo province will hold its commemorations on May 22 while Matabeleland North and South are yet to set a date for the festivities. Some of the activities that will take place during the week long celebrations are fashion shows, dance and music performances, art and craft exhibitions and herbal medicine exhibitions.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) communications and marketing officer Cathrine Mthombeni said this year’s celebrations would be held under the theme: “Celebrating Arts and Cultural Entrepreneurship”.

“The theme is to ensure that the arts sector doesn’t remain a vehicle for others to build their wealth, but that members of the sector, through their varied artistic skills, are able to improve livelihoods across the board,” Mthombeni said.

She said the theme was a response to Zim-Asset’s commitment to eradicate poverty that has bedevilled artistes over the past years.

“The 2015 Culture Week is also a response to demands in our country’s economic blueprint, Zim-Asset, that aims to promote value addition and beneficiation, as well as eradicate poverty through promoting entrepreneurship in the arts and culture,” she said.

Mthombeni said all other provinces would also hold their commemorations.
