A Lower Gweru villager who is part of a gang of four men which allegedly murdered a fellow villager following a dispute over a donkey, has been arrested after being on the run for two months.

Daniel Mpofu, 32, who allegedly murdered Last Khabo together with two brothers Munyaradzi, 27, Samuel, 18 and Fanuel Ncube, 30 in October was arrested yesterday in Mkoba Village 10 at around 11AM following a tip off.

Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko confirmed Mpofu’s arrest.

“I can confirm that the police have arrested Daniel Mpofu, a male adult aged 32 who was on the run since October following the murder of Last Khabo,” said Insp Goko.

He said Mpofu was expected to appear in court today to answer allegations of murder.

On October 25 this year, the quartet teamed up and armed themselves with axes and logs and approached Khabo at a plot.

The court heard the gang used axe handles and logs to assault Khabo all over his body.

They allegedly dragged Khabo for about 3km while at the same time assaulting him.

The gang later dumped him when he fell unconscious.

It is not clear what Khabo had done to Mpofu’s donkey that angered him.

After committing the crime with Ncube, Munyaradzi and Samuel, Mpofu fled the scene.

The police arrested Ncube, Munyaradzi and Samuel who appeared before senior Gweru Magistrate Tayengwa Chibanda facing one count of murder last week.

The trio was remanded in custody to December 15.

Prosecutor Daniel Tapfuma said: “Khabo was discovered lying on the ground near a road by Lameck Ndlovu who then reported the matter to the police. The gang was seen committing the offence by Brian Ncube and his friend,” he said.
