INGUTSHENI Hospital in Bulawayo has received drugs worth more than $3 000 from the Moses Mpofu Foundation.

Last year there were reports of patients attacking staff members due to a shortage of anti-psychotic drugs to stabilise them.

The foundation, which assists mentally challenged people across the country, also provided lunch for patients at the hospital.

Speaking at the handover ceremony on Sunday, Mr Moses Mpofu -the founder of the foundation – said helping the needy was his passion. He said the donation was a way of giving back to Ingutsheni Hospital which took care of his mother when she was ill.

“When I was born in 1975, my mother developed a mental challenge and she literally spent half of her life at this facility.

“It was not easy, we faced a lot of challenges as a family hence I decided that I would help this facility because we benefited a lot from it during my mother’s illness,” said Mr Mpofu.

Ingutsheni Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Ernest Manyawu received the donation on behalf of the institution.

Senior Matron at the Hospital, Vongai Chimbindi, encouraged the country’s citizens to take a leaf from the Moses Mpofu Foundation and help society.

“We should be able to help our relatives and it would really be appreciated if every citizen could lend a helping hand,” said Matron Chimbindi.

The psychiatric hospital caters for about 2 000 patients and entirely depends on Government’s budgetary allocations, which have not been adequate over the years.
