THE Landa John Nkomo Memorial Trust yesterday appointed an 11-member board of trustees who have been tasked with ensuring the late Vice-President’s projects are completed.
Announcing the board of trustees, his son Jabulani Nkomo who is the board’s chairperson, said Busiso Nkomo, Phillip Nkomo, Public Nkomo, Thandiwe Nkomo Ebrahim – the daughter of the late Vice-President Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo – Zanu-PF politburo member Dr Sikhanyiso Ndlovu, Senator Angeline Masuku, Retired Colonel Cde Tshinga Dube, Christopher Dube, businessman Raji Modi, and Nyararai Sibanda, were the appointees.

He said one more member would be announced at a later date.

Nkomo said the appointed trustees would prioritise the completion of the construction of the Landa John High School which is facing financial challenges.

The Senior Minister of State in the President’s Office Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo, who is the patron of the trust, welcomed the board members saying they have a duty of ensuring that Cde Nkomo’s legacy is perpetuated.

“I advise the trustees to conduct the business of the trust in a diligent, dignified and accountable manner in order to ensure that this great vision is not lost in the quagmire of neglect,” said Ambassador Khaya Moyo.

He warned the newly appointed board of trustees not to use Cde Nkomo’s initiative for selfish purposes.

“The provisions outlined in the notarial deed of Trust are very clear and provide adequate guidelines of what the Trustees can do and what they cannot do. Also clearly spelt out are the powers of the trustees and their administrative functions,” Cde Khaya Moyo said.

“Any activity carried outside these provisions will therefore be illegal. It will be an embarrassment to have any board member or the collective board or the administrative staff facing litigation arising from any impropriety or wilful misconduct in the execution of their duties. We must take this issue seriously and avoid bringing the good name of the late Vice-President into disrepute.”

Ambassador Khaya Moyo called on the nation to support the JLN Memorial Trust. “It is critical that the nation as a whole pledges its valuable support to a worthy cause that will ensure the wonderful work done by this great man continues as a lasting emblem of his legacy,” said Ambassador Khaya Moyo.

He said Cde Landa Nkomo touched the lives of many people and had a soft spot for the less privileged.

Ambassador Khaya Moyo said yesterday’s event was important as it coincided with Cde Landa Nkomo’s birthday, adding: “He would be turning 80 if he was still alive.”

A fund-raising dinner was held for the trust yesterday at a local hotel.
