A 61-YEAR-OLD Gweru man died yesterday after being struck by lightning on his way to work during heavy rains that pounded the city in the afternoon.

David Liver of Mkoba Village 2 died at around 3PM near the Heavy Industrial Site in Gweru.

Midlands Police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko said: “I can confirm a case of sudden death where a 61-year-old man from Mkoba Village was struck by lightning at around 3PM and unfortunately died on the spot.”

He said the man died close to Bata shoe factory on his way to work.

Police attended to the scene after they received a call from a passer-by. He was already dead.

Liver’s body was taken to the Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary for a post mortem which showed that his death was caused by lightning.

Insp Goko appealed to people to avoid standing in open areas during heavy rains. He also urged the public not to cross flooded rivers.
