A PLUMTREE married man who ripped open his girlfriend’s stomach with a knife, said he felt betrayed when he caught his lover who had infected him with HIV red-handed with another man.Tawanda Nyoni, 26, said this when he appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Crispen James Mberewere facing attempted murder charges.

Nyoni told the court that he discovered that his girlfriend was HIV positive and had infected him with the virus but they reached a consensus that they would continue with their affair.

“Your worship, she never told me that she was on Anti-Retroviral Therapy until I discovered it myself. I was very hurt and even told her that it was an offence to infect someone with HIV.

After that we agreed that we would live together with our condition but I was very hurt when I found her with another man,” said Nyoni.

Prosecuting Trust Muduma told the court that on March 22 at around 7PM, a misunderstanding between Nyoni and his lover started after he spotted her having a nice time with another man, Khune Ncube, at a local bar.

“He followed them at a distance as they left the bar in a car and proceeded to Ncube’s house in Mathendele area. Nyoni confronted the pair as they came out of the car and an argument ensued,” said Muduma.

The court heard that Nyoni produced a knife and Ncube jumped into his car and sped off leaving the victim at the mercy of her angry boyfriend.

Nyoni stabbed the complainant twice on her back and then ripped open her stomach.

“People from the neighbourhood heard her screaming and rushed to the scene where they found her lying in a pool of blood with some of her intestines protruding,” said Muduma.

Nyoni fled the scene but he later came back after a report had been made to the police.

Nyoni said he acted out of anger after his girlfriend deliberately infected him with HIV and later cheated on him with another man.

He was remanded in custody to July 31.
