A MAN has been hauled before the courts facing charges of terrorising villagers in Buvuma area of Gwanda South.

Brighton Zibusiso Moyo, 22, allegedly threatened to axe a fellow villager over “witchcraft” before he proceeded to rape a 19-year-old woman, a magistrate heard.

Gwanda magistrate, Olivia Mashava-Mashaire heard that Moyo had turned the lives of fellow villagers into a living hell as he allegedly attacked, assaulted, robbed and raped some of them.

Moyo pleaded guilty to assault, arson, robbery, unlawful entry, theft and malicious damage to property charges.

He was, however, not asked to plead to the rape charge as the magistrate advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

He was remanded in custody.

Prosecutor Getrude Zvidzai told the court that on February 14, this year, Moyo went to Butrine Bottle store in Fumugwe area in the middle of the night, unlawfully entered the building and stole items worth $55 belonging to Irene Ncube, the store owner.

On the following day at around 9PM, Moyo allegedly assaulted a 55-year-old woman of Majiya village accusing her of witchcraft.

Zvidzai said Moyo went to the complainant’s homestead where she was with her daughter and her nephew. He knocked on the bedroom door and the complainant asked him to identify himself and state what he wanted since she had locked the door, the court heard.

The court was told that Moyo then grabbed the woman’s daughter and took her to an unknown place where he allegedly raped her while the woman fled from her homestead and spent the night at a neighbour’s place.

On the same night, Moyo allegedly attacked another villager Senzeni Nyathi and threatened to kill her daughter for unknown reasons. Moyo allegedly threw stones and bricks at Nyathi who locked herself in her bedroom as he demanded to see her daughter.
