A pupil from Mzilikazi High School in Bulawayo, was stabbed yesterday by an unknown assailant who robbed her of $26 and a phone.

The 17-year old girl was reportedly attacked at around 1pm, a few metres away from the school.

The phone was later recovered as the suspect is said to have dropped it in the bush when he was fleeing.

A source from the school confirmed the incident saying two students came to report the issue and the school authorities helped them file a report at Barbourfields Police Station.

The girl said she was with a friend and were using a footpath that passes through a bush when she was attacked. “We were walking towards the school from the cemetery side and as we drew closer to the main road, a man who seemed to be fetching firewood, attacked me,” said the girl who cannot be named for ethical reasons.

She said the assailant walked past them and then suddenly turned and attacked her. The man, the girl said, held her by the neck demanding money and her phone. She said: “I tried to fight him off but he overpowered me and stabbed me three times on my hand. He took away my cellphone and $26 which was in my bag.”

Sources living nearby said the suspect dropped the phone when he was fleeing the scene after hearing voices of people approaching.

Sekai Madondo, a Mzilikazi resident, said the girl’s friend ran to the main road screaming but by the time she got help, the suspect had already fled. “A girl came running to the main road saying a man had attacked them and was holding her friend,” said Madondo.

She said it was strange for such an attack to happen in broad daylight.
