A local supplier of chicken cages, Newcozim Poultry Solutions expects increased volumes this year after clinching business with established producers with capacity to produce about eight million day old chicks per annum.

Managing director, Leigh Bookless said the network with the established producers has increased her company’s business prospects.

Newcozim Poultry Solutions expects to tap into 7,6 million combined hatching capacity for day old chicks per annum through Festive Eggs, Novatec, Charles Stewart Day old chicks and Hukuru Chicks.

“We work in conjunction together with Newcozim on the cages, Charles Stewart on the day old chicks and Hukuru on the layers,” said Bookless.

She expects to assemble cages with a holding capacity of almost 100, 000 chickens this year and twice as much for day old chicks.

“We import the cages as kits from India and assembled in Zimbabwe. We install chicken cages for layers, broilers and for raring,” said Bookless.

“Our first container for the year is arriving mid-next month. Each container holds 75 cages, each holding 240 birds,” said Bookless.

Novatec will soon be one of Newcozim Poultry agents and will distribute an exclusive brand of smaller cages that holds 56 birds each. The brand is targeted at small scale chicken farmers.

A 120 bird unit costs $750 inclusive of tax and installation while the 240 bird units cost $1,410 each.Currently Festive Eggs is Newcozim Poultry’s biggest customer.

Festive Eggs will be the first customer to be supplied with the chicken rearing cages, a new product which Bookless expects to drive volumes. Newcozim Poultry has a presence in Gweru, Chegutu, Mutare and Bulawayo through agents who distribute its cages and provide technical services.
