A man from Bulawayo’s Nkulumane suburb died on the spot while his friend has been hospitalised, following a brutal attack by three men who are still at large.

Vengai Clayton Muza, 27, is suspected to have died from a fractured skull after the thugs pounded him on the head with a brick on Saturday night.

His friend Branon Moyo, 29, was left for dead and only recovered consciousness at Mpilo Central Hospital after being beaten up by the yet to be identified trio as they walked from Mqombothi Sports bar.

Muza’s brother Knowledge, yesterday told of the horror of finding his brother’s body by a roadside.

“We were told of the incident by one of my younger brothers who had been notified about the attack by a witness. I drove to the scene and I found his lifeless body lying on the roadside,” he said.

The visibly disturbed Moyo could hardly speak.

Knowledge described his brother’s death as a major setback to the family, saying he was studying law in South Africa.

“He was very sociable although very talkative.

“He died on the spot. He was hit at the back of his head leading to him bleeding internally,” said Knowledge.

He said he was grateful to the police for responding swiftly when he called them to the scene.

A source said a witness tried to intervene after seeing the duo being attacked but the attackers turned on him as well.

After fleeing the scene, the witness notified Muza’s family who rushed to investigate.

The source said when the witness escaped to alert Muza’s family both Muza and Moyo were lying motionless on the ground, while the trio stomped on them.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango said the matter was under investigation.

This murder comes just days after police released murder statistics for Bulawayo province.

Bulawayo recorded a 23 percent increase in murder cases between January and September, with concerns that the city’s residents are killing each other over trivial issues.
