SOCIAL Gravity Art Exhibition will on August 1 open a month-long exhibition to showcase over 25 artworks at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. The aim of the exhibition will be to present the works of three Bulawayo artistes Lawrence Bango, Godfrey Lotus Makopa and Abigail Zulu.

Dubbed the “Three Men Show”, the exhibition running from August 1 to September 22, will confront contemporary issues affecting society in the region through art – as well as reflecting on national realities in the face of economic challenges.

The exhibition will be curated by Clifford Zulu with displays by metal sculptor Abigail Mathe and painters Godfrey Lotus Makopa and Lawrence Bango.

In a statement, Alliance Française de Bulawayo director Marie-Hélène Prédhom, said the exhibition presented a new light to the future of art.

“To us this show brings new light to the future of Bulawayo art as it is diverse, aesthetic and reveals an amazing experimental energy.”

Prédhom said the exhibition would kick off with a background talk on the encounters of the artists from January to July.

“The talk will highlight contemporary dynamics in aesthetics and form in a dialogue and the artist’s personal feelings on the exhibition,” she said.

Social Gravity is produced in collaboration with Israel Israel and Tafadzwa Gwetai who are Mathe and Makopa’s mentors and artists in their own right.
