AN 18-YEAR-OLD man from Masvingo allegedly fatally struck his father with a stone for restraining him from assaulting his mother, police have confirmed.

Tinashe Tinago was incensed that his father, William Tinago (57) of Manduna Village under Chief Mapanzure, had stopped him from assaulting his mother. He then struck his father on the head, leading to his death.

Tinago was rushed to Ngomahuru Hospital before being transferred to Masvingo General Hospital where he died upon arrival.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 10 AM. She said the body of the deceased was taken to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

“We have received a report of murder involving a man and his son. The father attempted to restrain his drunken son from assaulting his mother and the juvenile struck the former on the head with a stone. The suspect was arrested and is assisting police with investigations. He will appear in court soon facing murder charges,” said Insp Mazula.

She said on the fateful day, Tinashe was drinking home-made brew with other patrons at his homestead. Police said his mother, Ms Mary Mushoni (46), then went to church leaving him and his father as well as other patrons drinking beer.

At around, 2 PM, she said, Ms Mushoni returned and found Tinashe drunk, hurling insults at people at the homestead. “Without undue warning, the drunken Tinashe charged towards his mother threatening to assault her for no apparent reason. Tinago then restrained his son but he turned on him,” she said.

Tinashe then started assaulting his father using a switch but Tinago retaliated by hitting him on the right hand using a rubber sling.

Insp Mazula said this degenerated into a fight between the two but other patrons restrained them. After the two were restrained, Tinago and his wife left home in protest at their son’s behaviour.

They used a small foot path.

The enraged Tinashe followed them and after walking for about 700 metres from their homestead, he caught up with them and struck his father on the head with a stone. — @ walterbmswazie3
