The incident happened in Chief Mathupula Khumalo’s area at about 12.30pm on Saturday in Mr Siqo Tshuma’s homestead.
Acting Matabeleland North police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the incident yesterday and said the police were awaiting post-mortem results.

“We received a report of a two-year-old girl who died after she choked when she ate umthunduluka, a wild fruit. She was playing with her 12-year-old brother who gave her the fruit,” said Asst Insp Makonese.
She said after swallowing the fruit, the girl choked.

“The mother tried to help her and before she took her to hospital, the girl died. A report was made to Tsholotsho police who attended the scene and took the body to Tsholotsho District Hospital mortuary. The body was later taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem,” said Asst Insp Makonese.

She urged villagers to take extra care of their toddlers and never to leave them unattended.
“Mothers should make sure that their toddlers are near them. Leaving them with other siblings who are also very young can also be dangerous. Such incidents can be avoided if mothers desist from leaving children unattended,” said Asst Insp Makonese.
