A THIRD policeman who allegedly demanded a bribe from a cross border transporter at the Plumtree Border Post has been arrested.

Taurai Musiiwa, 31, who is attached to the Police Internal Security Intelligence (PISI) and is stationed at Madabe Police Base appeared before Plumtree magistrate, Livard Philemon, yesterday facing extortion charges.

He was remanded out of custody to November 26 on free bail.

Musiiwa and his two other workmates who appeared in court last week facing the same charges, Fume Chibvuri, 32, and Aaron Zivuku, 27, allegedly demanded a bribe from the same cross border transporter, Gift Moyo.

The three allegedly threatened to arrest Moyo if he did not yield to their demands.

Moyo recorded the police officers while they were demanding payment to grant him passage through the border.

Chibvuri and Zivuku were also remanded out of custody to November 26 on free bail.

Prosecuting, Clemence Shawarira said Musiiwa approached Moyo on July 6.

“On 6 July around 3PM Musiiwa was deployed at the Plumtree Border Post. Moyo arrived driving a Toyota Grandhiace on his way to Bulawayo from Botswana and he went through all border formalities and he was approached by the police officer who demanded money from him,” said Shawarira.

“Moyo indicated that he didn’t have money but Musiiwa threatened to arrest him if he didn’t comply. Musiiwa insisted until Moyo gave him P30 but he demanded another P20.”

He said Moyo begged the police officer and indicated that he did not have money but Musiiwa ignored his plight. He said the cop then snatched Moyo’s USB memory stick and told him that it was part of the payment and went away.

Moyo realised that the corrupt practices of the police officer were continuing unabated and recorded them on his phone.

A week after the incident Chibvuri and Zivuku are reported to have confronted Moyo at the same border and they demanded money from him.

The cross border transporter gave the two cops $20 but they complained that it was not enough.

The Chronicle managed to obtain two of the video recordings from Moyo which show the three cops separately demanding money from him.
