A revolution is quietly unfolding, one home visit at a time, in Bulawayo. Buhlebenkosi Sibanda, through her innovative venture Bella Vida Mobile Beauty Spa, is not just offering massages; she’s challenging societal norms, empowering herself and charting a path out of poverty.

Her mobile spa is more than a business — it’s a symbol of self-empowerment for women who are breaking free from the constraints of a patriarchal society.

“I was inspired to become a masseuse after experiencing the benefits of massage therapy first-hand and wanted to help others achieve relaxation from pain and stress.

“The most rewarding aspect of my profession is seeing the positive impact I have on my clients’ well-being. Whether it’s relieving chronic pain, knots, or simply helping them relax, knowing I’ve made a difference in their lives is incredibly fulfilling,” she expressed.

During Women’s Month, Buhlebenkosi reflects on the celebration of women’s strength, resilience and contributions to society. As a woman in a traditionally female-dominated profession, she takes pride in pampering her major clients —women.

“My work impacts the well-being of other women by providing a safe, comforting space for them to prioritise their self-care. Often women are asked to care for men, an hour’s massage helps a lot. I strive to empower women to take control of their wellness and beauty.”

The convenience of home massages offers clients the comfort and familiarity of their environment, enhancing the effectiveness of the experience.

“I personalise my service by understanding each client’s unique needs and preferences, ensuring a customised experience,” Buhlebenkosi added.

Safety during home visits is paramount. Buhlebenkosi ensures her safety by verifying clients’ identities and addresses, relying on referrals from trusted sources, and maintaining open communication with a trusted friend or family member about her schedule and location.

She recounted a challenge faced with a chatty client.

“The challenge I faced was a client who insisted on talking nonstop throughout the entire massage, sharing every detail of their day. I listened patiently and nodded at everything the client was saying. It’s important for one to be quiet during a massage as it allows one to fully relax and immerse oneself in the experience. It also helps me as the therapist to focus on my work and maintain a peaceful atmosphere.”

Her advice to other women considering a career in home-visit services is clear.

“Prioritise self-care, set clear boundaries and never compromise your safety. Build a support network and continuously educate yourself to provide exceptional service.”

Looking ahead, Buhlebenkosi aspires to expand her skills set with specialised massage techniques and build a team of female masseuses who share her passion for empowering women through wellness. — @Lo7246Lovelyn
