their defence amid genuine concerns raised about the state of their rearguard ahead of the start of the 2011 season.
CAPS United had offloaded the former Lengthens captain and a host of other players including David Sengu when they began their preparations for the season.
But after being badly exposed at the back in their 3-2 defeat by Dynamos in the Bob 87 Super Cup, Makepekepe have reviewed their decision and turned to Khanye again.
CAPS United had thought they had sealed to bring Warriors defender Daniel Veremu but the former Lengthens and Gunners man opted to join the cash rich newboys FC Platinum.
But CAPS United who are scheduled to play Zimbabwe Saints in their Castle Lager Premiership Soccer league opening match has recalled Khanye to avert a potential crisis in defence.
During their clash with Dynamos in a Bob 87 Super Cup, Makepekepe sent into battle a defence that included Edmore Chafungamoyo, Arnold Chivheya, Gilbert Mapemba and Ronald Sengu but it was in central defence where they appeared to struggle most.
Today, CAPS United will take on FC Platinum at Rufaro as they continue polishing their team for the new season.
The Green Machine has already played against Chicken Inn, Mutare Select, Division One Harare City Council and Dynamos in the build up matches.
Coach Moses “Bambo” Chunga said he would be fielding two teams, which in turn will play FC Platinum A and B sides.
“We have given Ndumiso another chance. We were looking at defenders but I think our situation is now healthy. We will field two teams from our squad with the first match starting at 1.30pm and the main game at 3pm,” said Chunga.
Chunga said they are having difficulties in coming up with the final squad due to new requirements by the PSL that each club should have five Under-20 players.
He blasted the PSL club’s resolution, which he claimed has made their job tough as coaches
“Even though I am an advocate of junior policy, I feel the way the policy has been implemented has left a lot of loose ends.
“At a club like CAPS United I need to field players that will do the job for me. But now I am forced to release other players because of the limit. I would advise them to waiver the requirement for this season because I don’t see the system working,” said Chunga.
In other friendly matches which have been sanctioned by the Premiership, Zvishavane based side Shabanie will make a short trip to Gweru for a clash against Division One side Chapungu.
The former Premiership side has reunited with Philip Marufu and Mathew Mahala.
Marufu is back after an unsuccessful stint with Democratic Republic of Congo outfit FC Lupopo.
Elsewhere, rebuilding Kiglon who are mulling a switch to Pfupajena for this season have a date with Chegutu Select.
As part of their rebuilding exercise coach Rodwell Dhlakama’s side has been playing a number of matches including a goalless draw with Eastern Region Division One side Buffaloes while they won 3-0 against Northern Region newboys Highfield United.
Despite building the team from scratch Dhlakama said he was happy with the team’s progress.
“By the time we play our first match, the team should have jelled. Most of the players are rookies, so we are also working on their physiology so that they adapt to the demands of the Premiership.
“If Pfupajena meet the requirements of the PSL then maybe we will be based there,” said Dhlakama. The PSL have made some slight adjustments to the 2011 fixtures, which were released earlier this week.
