A HWANGE magistrate has sent, for mental examination, a man from Chitungwiza who allegedly stole three packs of condoms and cigarettes with a combined value of $5 from a supermarket.

Canaan Guveya (36) of 9304 Unit K in Seke, Chitungwiza allegedly travelled from Harare to Hwange to allegedly watch his ‘favourite’ football team Hwange Football Club but ended up stealing from a supermarket.

Guveya pleaded guilty to theft charges, blaming his actions on alcohol.

He however, kept talking to himself and giggling in the dock which prompted Hwange magistrate Ms Sharon Rosemani to send him for mental examination.

“I admit to the charges, it’s only that I was very drunk after taking a lot of opaque beer,” said Guveya.

While still in the dock, he continued mumbling: “I heard that Chipangano (Hwange FC) are a good team and travelled from Harare to come and support them.”

Ms Rosemani ordered that Guveya be examined by two medical doctors as she remanded him in custody to Monday next week.

Prosecuting Mr Onias Nyathi said Guveya was spotted on closed circuit television stashing three packs of condoms and a packet of Pacific cigarettes into his pockets.

“On September 30, 2016, at 8PM, the accused entered OK Supermarket and took one box of 20 Pacific cigarettes and three packs of Carex condoms.

“Mr Siwela spotted the accused on CCTV and alerted a security guard Mr Felix Fusire who searched Guveya at the exit point and recovered the stolen goods from the pocket of a jacket he was wearing,” said the prosecutor.

The value of the stolen goods was $5, 20 and everything was recovered.
