BULAWAYO City Council has agreed to partner the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) to fund the $4 million Epping Forest project to augment the city’s water supplies.

According to the latest council minutes, the water project was initiated by Zinwa and council agreed to partner the authority and provide part of the required funding as it will benefit from the project.

The Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Cde Saviour Kasukuwere pledged government support for the project.

“This project would augment the city’s water supplies as it’s expected to provide an additional 10 million litres of water per day,” reads the minutes.

Zinwa and the council will soon invite tenders for the project.

On the refurbishment of existing Nyamandlovu boreholes, the minutes said only 14 out of the 77 boreholes were operational.

Zinwa was rehabilitating 20 additional boreholes, of which 10 have been pump tested and were under service. After this intervention, the anticipated water available for abstraction from Nyamandlovu would average 12 million litres per day.

Council said the construction of the Gwayi-Shangani Dam took off in 2004 but work has been suspended due to lack of funds.
