Renowned mbira songstress Diana Samkange, who is part of a stellar line-up for the Independence gala is on a mission to elevate the profile of mbira music.

Samkange, popularly known as MaNgwenya, views the Independence gala as a vital occasion for commemorating the hard-won freedom of the nation. The gala will take place at Murambinda growth point in Buhera on Thursday next week.

In an interview with Chronicle Showbiz, she expressed her delight at being selected as one of the performers of the event that will be broadcast live on national television broadcaster, ZBCtv.

“I’m thrilled to perform on Independence Day because, as a musician, I’m celebrating my freedom to perform in my homeland through music,” she said.

Commenting on the celebrations, she said: “Independence Day has evolved over the years, with stage presentations at musical galas and the Information Ministry’s efforts to ensure that all performers are well taken care of and provided with their requirements on time.

“Each Independence Day holds special moments for me, as it is a significant day commercially, allowing me to perform for diverse crowds annually.”

Samkange, who is from the Urban Grooves era, aims to leave a lasting impression on the audience with her mbira music, showcasing her pride in playing Zimbabwean instruments such as the mbira, ngoma and hosho.

“In my performance, I plan to infuse themes of Independence, patriotism and national pride into the playlist genre and my attire,” she explained.

“The creative process involves rehearsing new songs and refining my presentation.”

She added that nationwide celebrations like these are commendable initiatives from the Ministry and the Government, as every noteworthy event deserves commemoration. — @mthabisi_mthire
