TODAY, Africans across the continent are commemorating Africa Day, a day set aside for Afrocentric celebrations.

This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme: “Our Africa, Our Future” using the hashtag #OurAfricaOurFuture!

In Bulawayo, a host of festivities have been lined up for patrons and below is a rundown of some of them.
New Magwegwe residents will have an Africa Day to remember as businessman Blessing Mareya will be taking his corporate social responsibility to the community by uplifting local musical talent.

Mareya’s Wasu Enterprises in New Magwegwe will host a free show which will see Sunduza Dance Theatre, Kaisa Entertainment, DJ Khumz, Cliff Jeans, Ephraim Sfazo, MaFreak, Muntomnyama, Amazwi Amahle Express Band, Barrack_Bozz, and Dr ST entertaining residents.

In an interview, Mareya outlined the importance of celebrating Africa Day with the community.
“It’s important to preserve our culture and identity hence we saw it fit to engage with the community.

One will notice that the celebrations are being spearheaded by traditional dance groups. This was deliberately done to ensure that Africanacity is ensured.

“We’ll also have something special for scholars where we’ll be teaching them about a wide range of African dances and sounds. They’ll be taught about wild fruits and foods as well, something that is part of our DNA since history brings to remembrance that we were once hunters and gatherers before civilisation,” said Mareya.

Africans are a religious lot and today, a new ministry, Kings Bible Church will be launched in Bulawayo. A concert will be held to commemorate the feat. At the concert will be performances from Snowy, Vocal Ex, Siza Mdlongwa and Lorraine Maplanka.

Braaied meat and Africans are inseparable and in the spirit of enjoying juicy gastronomic goodies, patrons will enjoy an “Africa Braai Day” at Mduduzi Mdlongwa’s Hartsfield Tshisanyama where smoked beef, chicken, and pork will be the order of the day.

Picanha Steak House in Ascot will use Africa Day as a launch pad for its Wine and Pizza Thursdays, a weekly fixture where patrons will enjoy wine and pizza at discounted prices. What’s an Africa Day without music? Music at the establishment will be provided by wheel-spinners, DJ Prince Eskhosini as well as DJ Cuelty. – @MbuleloMpofu
