GOVERNMENT will soon announce a developer to dualise the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway as the new political administration under President Emmerson Mnangagwa prioritises the development of infrastructure.

This was said by Transport and Infrastructural Development Joel Biggie Matiza during a tour of Kazungula Border post and Ferry Bridge across the Zambezi River on Sunday.

“As for dualisation of the highway, it is work in progress. Expression of interest has been made and we will soon announce who will take up the job,” said Minister Matiza.

He could not be drawn into giving details saying an announcement would be made soon.

The dualisation of the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road is expected to attract self drive tourists into the country.

Tenders for the expression of interest were floated last year.

Government also intends to dualise the Victoria Falls-Kazungula road as part of plans to modernize the border with Botswana which handles more than 2 000 tourists daily.

Other major roads to be dualised are the Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu, Harare-Bulawayo, Harare-Mutare and Harare-Nyamapanda highways.

Government last year approved a $175 million road rehabilitation project under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) and the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP).

The funds will also see some bridges being constructed, a departure from the previous administration which saw the country’s infrastructure, including roads, deteriorating at an alarming rate.

Government also has plans to rehabilitate several other roads linking major towns and districts countrywide.
