US$100 bail by the High Court.
Andrew Manyani (49) allegedly gunned down his wife Susan Mafuriranwa almost three years ago along Old Mazowe Road in Malborough after a heated argument.
Manyani was granted bail after a successful application by his lawyer Mr Jonathan Samkange of Venturas and Samkange law firm. The prosecution had opposed bail.
Charges against Manyani arose on June 6 2008 when he met Mafuriranwa in Avondale after a long period of separation before the fatal incident. They discussed some issues before they agreed to go to Norton together, it is alleged. However, on their way to Norton the two passed by Mufuriranwa’s house along Josiah Tongogara to pick their four-year old daughter. On their way back from Norton, it is alleged, Manyani stopped the vehicle along Old Mazoe Road from Westgate in Marlborough.
He allegedly withdrew his firearm and shot Mufuriranwa once on the forehead in the presence of their four-year daughter. Mufuriranwa died instantly, says the State.
Manyani then allegedly dumped the corpse a few metres from the road and drove away.
It is further alleged that Manyani took the child back to her mother’s house and handed her to Mafuriranwa’s sister, Yvonne, after lying to her that he had left the child’s mother in town. Mafuriranwa’s body was, however, discovered the following day leading to the arrest of Manyani who had moved to Rusape. Upon searching Manyani’s vehicle, the state alleges that the police recovered a riffle and spent cartridges. The vehicle had a shattered rear view mirror and there were some bloodstains on the front passenger seat and door. Mr Samkange, however, told the court that his client would deny the charges, claiming that the victim killed herself. – CR.
