IN recognition of her extraordinary commitment and influential work, Iris Zemza Mhlanga, Founder and Executive Director of Nozizwe Mother of Nations Trust in Bulawayo, has been honoured with the distinguished Women Iconic Award 2024.

Iris’ steadfast dedication to philanthropy and nonprofit endeavours has established her as a pillar of hope and empowerment for many in need.
Her relentless pursuit to better communities and advocate for worthy causes stands as a shining example of true empathy and selflessness.

This accolade is a tribute to her significant accomplishments and acts as a beacon of motivation for others to emulate her path.

In an interview with Saturday Chronicle, Iris expressed her elation, stating that while national recognition is significant, being acknowledged on an international stage is truly extraordinary.

“I’m actually speechless for one because I’ve never received an International award or recognition for my charitable activities. This particular award came as a surprise to me. I have been nominated for the Women Changing the World Global Awards and Global Good Awards so I wasn’t expecting anything other than what I know of.

“I never really think of whose watching when I’m out there but these awards are indeed showing me that people are taking notice of everything I’m doing to empower vulnerable communities in Zimbabwe,” said Iris.

She encouraged women to look out for each other.

“We sponsor tuition for 1 000 orphans, we also partner with other organisations to feed 1 200 vulnerable children per day, we partner with organisations to provide free health checks as well as assist the disabled communities with mobility aides and skill empowerment programmes. We have 5 000 beneficiaries countrywide, we have also provided access to clean safe drinking water for various communities.”

Iris attributes her drive to the unwavering support and inspiration from her family, particularly her late father, Jonathan Temba Mhlanga. His esteemed tenure as President of the Highlanders Football Club left a lasting legacy of leadership and community engagement that continues to fuel Iris’ passion for her philanthropic work.

“My dad named me Nozizwe and over the years I have realised how that name has moulded me and driven me to be who I am today, a mother of many nations, being a mother comes naturally to me,” Iris said. — @Lo7246Lovelyn
