A BULAWAYO man who allegedly raped a 27-year-old woman in the late hours of the night at local shops has appeared in court.

Tinaye Mutoro (24) from Paddonhurst suburb appeared before the Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Mr Joseph Mabeza facing rape charges.

He was remanded in custody.

Mutoro is expected to appear in court today for commencement of trial.

Prosecuting Ms Portia Mashazhu said on 12 March, 2022 around 8pm, Mutoro met the complainant and asked her what she was doing at the shops.

“On 12 March 2022 at around 8pm the accused met the complainant at the shops, he asked the complainant what she was doing at the shops late at night and she told him that she had run away from home as she was afraid of going back to Engutsheni Hospital,” she said.

The court was told that Mutoro asked the complainant on which medication she was taking and the complainant told him that she was taking mental illness medication.

Ms Mashazhu said Mutoro then offered the woman a place to sleep and forced her to drink alcohol.

Mutoro then took the victim to his brother’s house.

“The accused slept in the same bed with the complainant and he had sexual intercourse with the complainant several times throughout the night without her consent and without protection,” she said.

The following morning, Mutoro went with the complainant to her sister’s place and left her there.

He ran out of luck when the victim told her sister what had happened and a police report was made.
