A MARRIED Bulawayo man allegedly gouged out his girlfriend’s eye with a broken bottle after she asked for money for their child’s upkeep, a court heard yesterday. For the brutal September 17 attack, Wisdom Vumani, 43, appeared before Western Commonage Magistrate Themba Chimiso charged with physical abuse.

Beauty Dube, 29, showed up in court with lacerations on her face and one eye completely shut. Dube was not called to the witness stand as Vumani pleaded guilty to the charge.

Vumani’s wife was present during the trial. Prosecuting Michelle Chiboiwa said on September 17, at around midnight Vumani approached Dube at Cowdray Park terminus and asked her to accompany him to his home.

The court heard Vumani accused Dube of having other boyfriends after she asked for money for their child’s upkeep. “During the argument Vumani slapped his girlfriend in the face and struck her twice with a bottle on her head as she ran away screaming for help,” said Chiboiwa.

“Vumani chased her and when he caught up with her he struck her again twice on the head with the bottle until it broke. He then used a piece of the bottle to stab her in the eye.”

Due to the assault the complainant lost her right eye and sustained deep cuts on her face, the court heard.

Magistrate Chimiso postponed the case to today for judgment.
