POLICE have launched a manhunt for six men who allegedly teamed up and beat a man to death in a dispute during a drinking spree.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident which occurred on Saturday at around 11PM in Fort Rixon.

She said the six men ganged up on Langton Mpofu (34) after he poured beer on the back of a bar lady.

The suspects have been identified as Takavarasha Sibanda, Thembani Moyo, Evans Mamvura, Previous, Mehluli and Kwazi.

“The six suspects were drinking beer at Lambisto Nightclub in Shangani area together with the now deceased, Langton Mpofu, and other patrons. Mpofu poured beer on the back of the bar lady and this didn’t go down well with the patrons who assaulted Mpofu.

“One of the suspects withdrew an axe and assaulted the now deceased with the back of the weapon. Another suspect stabbed Mpofu with a knife several times on the body. Mpofu died on the spot as a result of the attack. The suspects fled from the scene and are at large. We appeal to members of the public with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the police,” she said.

Insp Mangena said it was concerning that lives were being lost in disputes over petty issues.

“It’s worrisome that we continue to record murder cases emanating from small issues. We urge members of the public to respect the sanctity of life. People should find amicable ways of resolving disputes instead of resorting to violence,” she said.
