BINDURA Mayor Councillor Tinashe Malvin Madamombe, who is being accused of misappropriating funds and harassing workers, has been suspended.
This comes after six MDC-T councillors in the town petitioned the Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Igna-tius Chombo over the issue.
Minister Chombo last Friday wrote a letter to Clr Madamombe informing him of the suspension.
“Following a letter of complaint/petition forwarded to me dated 18 February 2011 by your fellow councillors and the subsequent meeting I held with yourself and all councillors of Bindura Municipality over allegations of misconduct, alleged abuse of office, misappropriation of funds, lack of good corporate governance and failure to properly discharge council duties among others.
“I have satisfied myself that there is a basis for investigation and inquiry into the acts of misconduct and that the affairs of Bindura Municipality have come to a standstill as a result of acrimony between you and your fellow councillors as clearly expressed in my meeting with yourself and your fellow counci- llors on the 24th of February 2011.
“I hereby suspend you from being a councillor for Bindura Municipality in terms of section 114 (1) c, and (d) (1) (111) of the Urban Councils Act (29:15) as amended,” read part of the letter dated February 25, 2011.
Minister Chombo said during the period of suspension, Clr Madamombe should not conduct any council business within or outside council premise.
He shall not be eligible to receiving any form of remuneration from council.
“You (Clr Madamombe) will be accorded an opportunity to respond to the allegations levelled against you by your fellow councillors in a properly constituted inquiry in terms of the law,” Minister Chombo said.
The letter was copied to Mashonaland Central Governor and Resident Minister Advocate Martin Dinha.
The six councillors – Ivory Matanhire, Elizabeth Mafiosi, Rindai Muchemwa, Nor- bert Dhokotera, Rickson Kaseke, Makesure Mafukidze and Washington Mudadi – recently wrote and signed a letter to Dr Chombo and Adv Dinha complaining about Mada-mombe.
“The proceedings which are happening at the council from the day the Mayor and the Acting Town Clerk took offices are uncalled for, there is gross misuse of council funds,” reads part of the letter.
The councillors said workers were harassed and suspended from work without any case to answer.
