LOSING Bulawayo Central Zanu-PF parliamentary candidate and former Chicken Inn treasurer Mlungisi Moyo is angling for the Zifa vice presidency and is still consulting before deciding whether or not to challenge incumbent Omega Sibanda in the December 1 elections.

The nomination process for the Zifa executive committee elections is in full swing and is set to close on October 30.

Moyo has become the first person to publicly declare an interest in challenging an incumbent, although talk in the corridors is that another politician Gift Banda is also mulling challenging Phillip Chiyangwa for the Zifa presidency.

“I am still consulting family on that one, especially in view of these exorbitant fees which go with the whole process.

“When you enter, you need to have done enough ground work, but personally I have no problem running for the post of Zifa vice-president. I have given 10 years of football service to Chicken Inn and I can only go higher,” said Moyo.

He said he had nothing against the incumbent Zifa administration, but feels he can only inherit the good work they have done and take it higher.

“A lot of guys are saying I should go for it, and like I said, I have no problem with that, but I need to make proper and thorough ground work, largely because of the financial requirements and other pressing issues which I might have because this is the highest post in football which needs one to be totally committed to, not on a part time basis,” said Moyo.

According to the Zifa elections roadmap, any person that wants to be president of the association has to fork out $5 700, of which $200 is for the nomination form.

Candidates for the vice-president have to part with $4 200, with $200 going towards purchase of the nomination form.

The four elected members of the executive outside the seconded ones from the PSL and women’s football have to pay $3 200.

Bulawayo City FC liaison officer Eddie Chivero also confirmed on Sunday that he was eyeing a post in the Zifa leadership as a board member.

“I have picked up my papers for the position of board member,” said Chivero.

Former board member Felton Kamambo is also said to be eyeing the Zifa presidency and yesterday tried to pick up nomination papers, but could not access them as the association’s chief executive officer Joseph Mamutse is in Namibia at a Caf workshop.

Kamambo and Piraishe Mabhena resigned from the Zifa executive committee early this year saying their terms of office had expired.

Chiyangwa last week said those who are keen on challenging his leadership were free to pick up nomination papers and join the race.
