CHICKEN INN coach Joey Antipas says his team has a lot of work to do despite qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Chibuku Super Cup after victory over Bulawayo City at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday.

Although the score line may reflect a routine win for the Gamecocks, they were far from their best and struggled with their game and only managed to utilise the few chances that came their way.

City were by far the better side and controlled proceedings, but failed to turn their dominance into goals and were duly punished.

Second half goals from Clive Dzingai and Brian Muza sealed the three points for the Gamecocks and qualification to the last eight of the new season’s curtain raiser tournament.

Dzingai opened the scoring in the 67th minute, tapping home from close range after a defensive blunder by City.

Substitute Muza grabbed the second, which ended the match as a contest in the 82nd minute. The former Talen Vision striker volleyed home Xolani Ndlovu’s beautifully curled free-kick.

“First of all, l would like to congratulate the boys for collecting maximum points we needed to progress to the next round. It was not the best of performances, but the main thing was to get over the line.

“We played well in some phases, but the boys are still rusty. We have always struggled in the Chibuku Super Cup, so l am happy that we have progressed to the next round. We still have lots of work to do to improve,” said Antipas.

His opposite number Philani ‘Beefy’ Ncube said: “Honestly, we were playing a seasoned and strong side, but in terms of performance we were better than them. The only thing they did was to score and their scoring was a result of our mistakes.

I don’t want to come up with excuses because we collapsed and l had told the boys that this is an experienced side and once they take the lead it will be difficult to come back. However, this is work in progress and l am happy with the team. We are planning and building towards the league.”

Chicken Inn are now on 10 points, three ahead of second-placed Highlanders, who take on Bulawayo Chiefs at the same venue this afternoon.
