A JILTED Gweru taxi driver who recently went berserk and ripped open his long time girlfriend’s stomach, gouged out her eyes with a screw driver and strangled her before attempting to commit suicide by hanging, has been hauled before the courts.

Charles Moyo of Mkoba Village 17 high density suburb appeared before Gweru magistrate Judith Taruvinga facing a murder charge.

He was not asked to plead and remanded in custody at Gweru Provincial Hospital to December after the court considered that he still needed medical attention.

Moyo was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

The state led by Andrew Marimo will seek to prove that on Wednesday last week at around 3PM, Moyo stabbed and ripped open his estranged girlfriend Fadzai Chipfunde’s stomach with a kitchen knife, gouged out her eyes using a screw driver before striking her with a brick on the head.

Marimo said Moyo, who was suspected to have been intoxicated, went on to strangle Chipfunde.

It is alleged that on the said date, Moyo went to Chipfunde’s place where the two had a misunderstanding.

Marimo said the misunderstanding came after Chipfunde had allegedly ditched Moyo for another man.

The court heard that the two had an altercation after Moyo had confronted his girlfriend over the matter.

It is also alleged that Moyo dragged Chipfunde to her bedroom where a heated argument ensued.

Moyo is said to have started assaulting Chipfunde all over her body before stabbing her in the stomach with a kitchen knife.

He went on to pluck out her eyes out using a screw driver and struck her with a brick on the head before strangling her using a long cloth.

The court heard that soon after the alleged crime, Moyo tried to commit suicide by drinking a poisonous substance.

Marimo told the court that Moyo was rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital by fellow tenants where he is receiving treatment.

The matter was reported to the police leading to his arrest.

Chipfunde’s body was left in the room for about a day before being retrieved on the following day by the police and her relatives.
