THREE people died on the spot when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in reportedly veered off the road, rolled several times and landed on its roof along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway yesterday afternoon.

The accident, involving a Toyota Quantum commuter omnibus, which occurred just outside Kwekwe near Sable Chemical industries also left 12 people injured.

The injured were rushed to Kwekwe General Hospital.

Officer Commanding Kwekwe Police, Chief Superintendent Denford Maingire confirmed the accident.

“I can confirm the accident, which happened just outside Kwekwe near Sable Chemicals,” he said.

“For now, we don’t have much information as investigations are still underway, but preliminary information has it that the vehicle was travelling from Kadoma to Kwekwe when the accident happened,” said Chief Supt Maingire.

He said according to initial investigations, the vehicle was not registered to be plying the Harare-Kwekwe route.

“The commuter omnibus was not registered according to preliminary investigations. But we will release more information as investigations unfold,” he said.

According to eye witnesses, the driver of the vehicle was speaking on the mobile phone when the accident happened.

“He was on the phone then he almost rammed into a haulage truck and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle rolled several times and landed on its roof,” said an eye witness who refused to be named.
