WINNER of the 2022 edition of the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon Jonathan Chinyoka and Matabeleland South-based Nkosiyazi Sibanda are among the top runners who have registered for the Binga Kasambabezi Marathon.

The duo is part of the 300 athletes who have registered for the annual race that will be held at Binga Centre on October 29.

Chinyoka runs for the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) team while Sibanda is affiliated to Blanket Mine in Gwanda.

Recent Ncube, the local organising committee chairperson said they expect a number of renowned road runners to take advantage of the registration deadline extension to register.

The organisers announced that they have extended the deadline which was yesterday by five days and will now close on Saturday, October 22.

“We are happy with the registration progress and we’ve hit the 300 mark. We expect more athletes to register now that the deadline has been extended.  We have Zimplats, Blanket Mine and Black Rhinos  among the clubs that have registered their athletes. At this stage, I can safely say we’re almost there in terms of organising and the response from the athletes is good, especially when you get one organisation registering 90 athletes,” said Ncube.

Registration fees for the 42km marathon are set at US$10 while those interested in participating in the half-marathon will pay US$7. Registration to compete in the 10km race is US$5 and the 5km fun run has been set at US$2.

The organisers have set up an online registration platform.

“Registration will now close on Saturday, 22 October to give people who might have failed to meet the initial deadline time to sign up for the race. For the sake of convenience, online registration can be done through the link. Those paying hard cash can take a picture of their receipt and those paying through EcoCash platforms, can screenshot the confirmation,” Ncube said. — @ZililoR
