UMAHLEKISA Comedy Club has decided to offer free shows at Amagugu International Heritage Centre in Matobo as a way to spread comedy to other places in the country. The cultural centre, situated about 60KM along the Bulawayo Kezi road, will host the show on January 30 at noon.

Performing on the day will be Umahlekisa founders, Mandla Simbarashe and Lady D.

Van Moyo said the show was part of efforts to market the venue to their followers.“We’ve partnered with the Amagugu custodians to market the place. Comedy lovers can come and enjoy our jokes while they braai on the rocks. This is to meant to market other facilities at the place such as mountain climbing, camping and nature walk. So I’ll encourage people to get their tourist boots on and come to enjoy free comedy with nature,” said Van Moyo.

He said they wanted to make it free to encourage more people to come to the show that will end at 6PM.“One can’t make people pay for comedy when they’ve driven all the way from Bulawayo and other areas. We should appreciate the efforts that they would have made and we can get money from other things. Also people in the surrounding areas will also be there to have a taste of comedy,” said Van Moyo.

Turning to future plans, Van Moyo said they were going to hold Umahlekisa every last Friday of the month.“For the rest of the year Umahlekisa Comedy Nights are on every last Friday of the month at different city venues for only $5. We are the only ones who still accept the Rand at a rate of one is to one.”Umahlekisa Comedy Club was formed in 2013 by Van Moyo and award winning comedian Clive Chigubu who are committed to promoting the growth of comedy in Bulawayo.
